Magical Moving Images | School Holidays

Step back in time, learn skills from the past and experience some of the hard work done every day, in hands-on activities and demos with costumed guides. 20–30-minute sessions are a great way to extend your visit!

Explore the technologies of 1800’s entertainment, long before the invention of movies, cartoons and video games, where images were magically brought to life though electric light and optical tricks. 


Tuesdays

  10:30am: ‘The Illusions’ - Magic Lantern, Stereoscope, Phenakistoscope. A demo of 1800’s image entertainment & optical illusions. In the Victorian parlour of Puhi Nui homestead. 

Wednesdays

10:30am: Bread making ($10pp)            

Thursdays

10:30am: ‘The Illusions’ - Magic Lantern, Stereoscope, Phenakistoscope. A demo of 1800’s image entertainment & optical illusions. In the Victorian parlour of Puhi Nui homestead. 

11am: Candle making ($6pp) 

Fridays

12:30pm: Fire-starting demo

Until 3pm: Butter making

Saturdays

Sundays

Until 3pm: Butter making

 Everyday

10:30am: Feed the chooks at 10:30am

Make a whirligig & a thaumatrope (self-guided) 


Admission: adult $15, senior/student $12, child $7, child under 5 free. No bookings required but please note numbers are limited for bread and candle making. Open Tues-Sun 10am-4pm. Last admission at 3pm.  

*For safety reasons no actual lighting of fires will occur.
