Scholar Talk | (Un)Parallel Lives: The historical relationship between Harakeke & European Flax
Join us in Bell House for a scholar talk led by PhD student Isabelle Carter
Isabelle’s talk focusing on harakeke and European flax is the result of a three-month Researcher Employability Project, which is part of her PhD journey, funded by the distinguished White Rose College of the Arts and Humanities. She is currently in the third year of her PhD within the Department of Archaeology at the University of York where she is studying squatters’ settlements in Early Modern England.
For this ethnobotanical project, Isabelle is examining the initial European misunderstanding of harakeke (Phormium tenax) as a flax. The talk will focus on the cultural significance of harakeke for Māori, with the many different uses of this amazing plant, including the great breadth of material culture that can be made from it. There will be a discussion of the European and Pākehā attempts to process harakeke during the eighteenth, nineteenth, and twentieth centuries using methods similar to those used for European flax (Linum usitatissimum), resulting in the exploitation of harakeke to produce large quantities of cordage and canvas.
For the first month of the project, Isabelle was based in London in the UK conducting research at The National Archives, the British Museum, Kew Gardens, The Natural History Museum, and the Caird Library. For the second and third months of the project, she has been based at Howick Historical Village, where she completed primary source collections research; attended harakeke weaving wānanga; partook in Tāmaki Paenga Hira Auckland Museum’s Te Aho Mutunga Kore Community Forum; and conducted interviews with weavers and museum professionals, focusing on their experiences with both harakeke and European flax. The photographs that she took during these visits, and the contents of these discussions, will be included in this talk.
Additionally, the project will result in a permanent display board that will be able to be seen in the Village, located between the harakeke and wharariki (Phormium cookianum), in front of John Bycroft’s Flour Mill.
The talk itself will be one hour, with half an hour for questions and discussion.

Interwoven Threads
In collaboration with Lagi Maama and the Tiare Taina māmās, Howick Historical Village is pleased to present a display of treasured textiles from Moana Oceania. This installation, held during Auckland Heritage Festival 2024, showcases the fibre art traditions of the interconnected islands within this ecosystem, and explores the cross-cultural connections between these art forms and the Western crafts of quilting and needlework.
Engage your own creativity and join us for special crafting sessions to make a colorful, felt blanket stitch badge, or play with patterns to make a felt placemat or artwork inspired by the appliqué motifs of Cook Island tīvaevae textiles during the school holidays!
About the Exhibition
Treasured textiles and garments of Oceania Moana are heirlooms - markers of identity and heritage - passed down through generations. Through embroidery and appliqué, intricate patterns of tiare (flowers) and manu (birds) spread joyously across colourful fabric, showcasing the ceremonial language of women and their collective craftsmanship. Born out of historical conversations, conflicts, and kaupapa between Christian Missionaries and the Indigenous peoples of the islands located throughout the Pacific Ocean, traditional textiles of Moana Oceania interweave indigenous knowledge into cross-cultural encounters with the Western crafts of quilting and needlework.
The exhibition foregrounds the traditional material of the Fijian masi (tapa cloth) as significant taonga for life-cycle events. After the arrival of the missionaries in the 1800s, Moana Oceania textiles undergo a material shift, as seen in the Cook Islands tīvaevae and Kiribati tibuta. Juxtaposed with the earlier Fijian material culture, these nationally symbolic techniques are drawn from missionary influence, interwoven with the layers of the quilts and smocking that traveled the world with them.
Join us as we explore textile traditions from Te-moana-nui-a-kiwa to Aotearoa New Zealand, all set in dialogue with historic quilts from the Howick Historical Village collection. Featuring Cook Island tīvaevae and Fijian masi, as well as works by artisans from Moana Oceania, explore interconnected influences through these remarkable textiles.
Admission: adult $16, senior/student $13, child $8, child under 5 free, family $40. No bookings required. Open Tues-Sun 10am-4pm. Last admission at 3pm.
